PLEASE NOTE: Due to the recent health issues, we have had to postpone Carlos Barbosa-Lima's residency once again until April 2021. Stay tuned for a complete schedule of events, including the premiere of a new guitar concerto by Leo Brouwer which was co-commissioned by Global Education Center and Intersection Music and will be premiered at a concert on April 24, 2021 at Vanderbilt's Blair School of Music Ingram Hall. Depending on the final date, Maestro Brouwer may be joining us as well. Stay tuned!

BHARATANATYAM
Kala Nivedanam School & Monica Cooley. Dance classes are offered in the Kalakshetra style of Bharatanatyam, a classical dance style native to southern India, for all levels from beginning through advanced and for all ages from 5 years through adult. All classes are taught personally by Monica Cooley. Class sizes do not exceed ten students with individual attention given to each dancer. Classes are offered six days a week. Classes are offered to students of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and levels. Instruction follows a traditional curriculum beginning with a solid foundation in basic technique and culminating – for serious students – in an arangetram, or professional debut. Through these activities, each class works to spread awareness, understanding and respect for the classical art traditions of India. INDIAN MUSIC AND VOCALS
Kala Nivedanam School & Mahadevan Sankaran. In this class each individual will receive professional quality instruction in Carnatic vocals and music from the experienced and highly skilled Dr. Sankaran Mahadevan. Students of all ages learn the traditional vocal styling and musical techniques provided with individualized attention best suited to their needs. ARGENTINE TANGO MONDAYS @ 7 PM
$15 per class or $80 for the 6-week class pass (cash or check)
Let's tango! This is a great dance class for those who are already familiar with Argentine tango, dance regularly, have not danced tango in a while or would like to brush up on tango basics. This intermediate series led by Maria Pia of the Nashville Tango Club, focuses on tango fundamentals, basic steps, patterns and lead and follow technique. No partner is required. ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING MONDAYS @ 7:00 PM
$3/adult
English Country Dancing is the most stately ancestor of all contra dancing. It dates all the way back to the 17th century and continues today with new dances being written using dance figures Henry VIII would have been familiar with! Remember Keira Knightly in “Pride and Prejudice?” That’s the flavor: playful, energetic dances and more elegant, leisurely ones, too. An excellent opportunity for beginners, but experienced dancers are welcome. Cost: $2-3 per evening to cover hall rental. Yoga has been shown to have numerous physical, mental, and emotional benefits including relief for stress and depression, increased strength, flexibility, circulation, and improved concentration and mental clarity. In this great community setting, this yoga practice provides an opportunity to experience unity through the shared experience of yoga ranging from faster-paced vinyasa to restorative and chair yoga. Classes explore the music, history and physical movements of Capoeira, a martial art developed by individuals who came to Brazil from Africa during the transatlantic slave trade. It is believed that they disguised their martial art as a dance (i.e. capoeira) and eventually used it to help escape from slavery. Led by instructor, Professor Eme Eme, each class will teach basic and advanced capoeira movements and concepts at a pace tailored to suit each student. Students of all ages and levels of skill are welcome to attend. Please wear comfortably fitting clothes that will allow a range of movement. Please note that Capoeria is performed barefoot. An inviting and welcoming African Dance technique and community class with veteran instructor, Tirra Hargrow and accompanied by the Djembe beats of live drummers. This is a full body workout with light choreography and lots of fun. All levels of experience and ages (7+) are welcome. Learn the original "lead and follow" style of belly dance known as American Tribal Style (ATS®), a distinctly American style of belly dance that begets a melting pot of moves inspired by the ethnic dances of many cultures, from the Middle East to North Africa, India and the Flamenco dance of Spain. Using improvisational choreography, a vocabulary of movements and cues allows the dancers to communicate while dancing. This class is perfect for beginners and those who are looking to take their preliminary experience to the next level. Belly dance originated as a way for women to develop strong abs and hips to aide in child birth, but today we use it to have a great time and create overall health (with the added benefit of rock hard abs).
